Biography:

Amrit Khurana’s artistic career began as a young child. Her parents noticed her love for drawing at age four, and her talent for painting was recognized by her teachers at the Selaqui International School in Dehradun at age eight. Anand S. is freelance contemporary artist and graphic designer. During his studies of a four year Diploma course at Kalakshetra Foundation Collage of Fine Arts, Chennai, Anand S. had the opportunity to have (late) Prof. S. Dhanapal as his Guru and acquired adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of painting. His guru used to expose him and his other students with the centuries-old works of Great Artists and different methods adopted by them, namely paintings of reality, Impressionism, Expressionism. He would also show them the eminent works of last/current centuries who have created modern techniques like Cubism and Contemporary Abstracts. On completion of his studies in 1999, he was mainly using pallet knives in doing landscapes in impressionistic style in different mediums like oil, acrylic and also brush works in watercolor.

Thereafter, while doing works for the Junior Fellowship during 2002 – 2004, he had fully engaged himself in doing different types of land, sea, mountainscapes in semi-realistic forms with the help of pallet knives and scraping the parts of trees, bushes, and shrubs. During his travel in the field of art for the past nine years, he is presently working on a series of abstracts under the “Woven Hues Series”. Each installment of these series is done with acrylic on canvas with special tools in Impasto technique which is Anand’s innovative style that utilizes different colors in layers giving importance to space and textures.

kamal nain Bhan

Skip to: Biography - Artwork - Press

Biography:

Native of Kashmir and refugee, Kamal uses art to not only transport himself back to his beloved home Valley but to communicate his emotions and sentiments that he could not otherwise share as effectively as words. Kamal Nain Bhan is a 56-year old deaf artist who natively hails from Kashmir, India. Since childhood, he has had a strong inclination towards art and crafts. While growing up as a young adult, he had to witness the brutal impact of Islamic fundamentalism, which led to the forced exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in 1990-91. Kamal Nain Bhan as well as many other Kashmiri Pandits (people of his community) had to leave their belongings and escape from their homes midnight, due to the worsening security conditions in J&K at that time. This meant resettling in the hot and humid plains of Jammu and forever brewing the hope of returning to the beautiful valley of Kashmir surrounded by the snow-clapped Himalayas. The exodus has left a gaping wound in his heart and both the landscape of Kashmir along with the sorrow of being forced to leave the Valley reoccurs in his works from time to time.

Biography:

“I started taking interest in computer graphics and used to practise it in a playful way. Nobody could foresee that a boy who could not draw even a single line properly, would start making pictures conveying depth and deep insight. My work was very much appreciated by everyone. My grandfather then bought a computer for me; I was fascinated by it. When I began conveying my inner thoughts on screen through computer drawing and graphics, people were pleasantly surprised and motivated me further. Finally in 2003, I hosted my first solo exhibition and got a great response from the viewers which boosted my confidence. Also, my entries got selected for the National Exhibition organized by Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi in 2004. This is how my journey as an artist started. The severity of my physical condition posed a hurdle in pursuing an Art degree from a renowned art college at Chandigarh. Therefore, I could not pursue my degree. In 2011, I was invited by my dream college in Chandigarh to conduct a workshop on digital art. Virtual reality proved to a blessing as it gave me mental and emotional strength to cope with my condition.”

Prabha Shah

Skip to: Biography - Artwork - Press

Biography:

Prabha Shah has been a valuable member of the contemporary Indian art world for almost five decades. Born in 1947, she discovered painting as a young girl and immediately welcomed it into her life as a calming and communicative presence. She spent her early education at the Government Lady Noyce School for the Deaf, Dumb, and Blind in New Delhi, learning in the context of speech and hearing impairment. She later studied painting informally at the Kanoria Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Jaipur as a student of Canadian artist Bill Wheaton, and at the University of Udaipur as a student of P. N. Choyal. She continues to paint as a freelance artist at the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi under the guidance of Rameshwar Broota. She has held fellowships at the Department of Culture, Government of India, and the Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi from the 1970s through the 2000s, earning several awards during that same time. From the 1960s through the present day, she has exhibited her work in solo and group shows. Her paintings are on display in the collections of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Cabinet Secretariat, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.

Throughout her career, Shah has created surreal and nuanced odes to the rural and urban landscapes in which she has lived. She embraces a set of earthly motifs - stones and sky, doorways and windows, water and sand - that emphasize the role nature has played in her development as an artist. Her work is imbued with subtle color transitions, surprising textures, and a confidence that can only come from years of practice. She can be followed through her Facebook page.

Biography:

Prasanna DP.jpg

For Prasanna, art is his passion where he is able to show the world his painting skills. At the early age of five, he found his first love which was art. It started when he was observing the sky to see how the clouds move. He loved to identify each of the cloud shapes resembled various figures to him and with that idea, he started to experiment with drawing by using chalk on the floor to draw these floating figures, turning ordinary clouds into lifelike animals. Witnessing his creativity, his mother encouraged him to continue and make more art. During his teenage years, we went on to work in Mumbai for ten years as a painter and made promotional posters for upcoming films. After ten years, he moved back to Coimbatore and worked as a self-employed artist while attending solo exhibitions and has been able to sell all of his work in both India and Malaysia. To his success, Prasanna states that he is “happy as a self-employed artist.”

Not defined or limited by what he can communicate by words or sound, Prasanna masterfully communicates his thoughts and interests and makes “noise” out of “silence” in his breathtaking paintings.

Raju Patel

Skip to: Biography - Artwork - Press

Biography:

Born in Jharkand in 1973, painter Raju Patel produces powerful expressions of his experience of disability. He received his diploma (2000) and post-diploma (2002) in painting from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. In the time since then he has explored his experience of India’s social, cultural, and physical landscape as a disabled artist. He has held two solo exhibitions: “Stand By Me” at Knots Art Space in Baroda (2016) and “Renitent Bodies” at Asia Culture Center, South Korea (2017). He also participated in over 50 group exhibitions, including the 58th National Exhibition of Art in Bangalore, and several workshops and camps across the country. He was awarded a merit scholarship by his university; a 2009-2010 Junior Fellowship by the HRD, Ministry of Culture, Government of India; and the 2010 Navdeep Pratishthan Award for painting. He continues to paint and participate in the thriving art world in Baroda and beyond.

Patel’s watercolor paintings delve into themes that he faces in his daily life: (dis)ability, social exclusion, the body as vehicle, and interactions with physical environments. Though his collection of work contains diverse motifs, his core subjects include locomotor impairment and symbols of mobility: shoes, feet, athletics, and communication tools. The watercolors are often muted yet layered and rich, displaying a unique mastery of the medium. While his paintings sometimes tend toward the smaller size, he uses the space carefully to create thoughtful and nuanced statements on the place of disability in our world.
